4 ways to create awesome borders on Google Docs

How can I add page borders in Google Docs?

1. Add page borders by using a table

  1. Go to your Google Docs page and in the Start a new document choose Blank.
  2. Now in the Menu click on Insert, select Table, and choose a 1 x 1 grid.
  3. Resize the cell to fit your needs.
  4. In the top-right, you will have the border options: Background colour, Border colour, Border width and Border dash. You can change the format in the manner that you see fit.

That’s it. You know have a border on your document and you can add text, pictures, and other things inside the cell created at step 2.

2. Add a page border by using the Draw function

  1. Go to your Google Docs page and in the Start a new document choose Blank.
  2. In the Menu click on Insert, select Drawing, and choose New.
  3. In the top menu click on Shape, select Shapes, and choose how you want your border to look.
  4. Once a shape created, a Border menu will appear and from there you can format the border.
  5. In the end, click Save and Close.
  6. The border will appear on your document.
  7. If you want to change the format after you saved, click on the border in the document and a menu will appear. Click Edit.

3. Add a document border by insterting a picture

In the end, if you’re not satisfied with the result, you can always download and insert a frame/border picture file as a background for the document.

Just be sure to stretch it, if needed, and the resolution is high enough. After that, insert a text frame and you’re good to go.

You can follow these exact steps to achieve good results, even though this method proves to be far more restrictive than using the previously-mentioned methods.

  1. Find the image you want to use as a border by using a Google Images search (make sure that the image is a PNG with a transparent background).
  2. Download the respective image to your PC, in a easily-accessible location.
  3. Inside the Google document, click on Insert from the top menu, and choose Drawing, and then + New.
  4. Click the Image option from the toolbar at the top.
  5. Either drag and drop the border image you previously downloaded, or click the Choose an image to upload button.
  6. Click the Texbox option from the top toolbar.
  7. Drag and drop the text box inside the border image.
  8. Type the desired text in the box, and click the Save and close button.

4. Add borders for specific paragraphs

Even though this type of paragraph will not encase your entire document, it is a very useful tool in case you want to evidentiate a specific part of the text.

Using this wisely in your design can make your document stand out from the rest, and here are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Click the Format option from the top taskbar.
  2. Hover your mouse over the Paragraph Styles option, and choose Borders and Shading.
  3. Adjust the properties to fit your needs.
  4. Click Apply when you’ve finished editing the settings.

Can I create custom borders in Google Docs?

Yes, you have an unlimited amount of options when it comes to this task, but it is worth noting that for now, you can only do so by creating a PNG file with a transparent image and adding it to your document by following the solution nr. 3 presented in this guide.

Will my custom border be automatically added to all pages in my document?

As the entire process of adding a border to your document is made manually, at this point no method can apply it to all pages at once.

That means that you will have to repeat the same process mentioned in this guide for all the pages included in your document (if needed).
